As the warmer days are coming to a close, it’s time to start thinking of how we are going to ‘winterize’ our outdoor plants. Especially our evergreens, and even more specifically our broadleaf evergreens! After this years drought it is even more critical to ensure that they are going into the colder season well-watered. Even though our broadleaf evergreens need a little extra attention, our needled evergreens need some TLC as well!
We recommend giving your evergreen a good soak, weekly, until you have your hose turned off for the year! Your Evergreens need enough water to make it through the winter, so a good soak, once a week should do the job!
If you can delay turning your hose off until the end of November, that is ideal! Keeping those evergreens hydrated will only make the cold winter months easier for them!
If your evergreen is new, this trick especially applies to them, as they are still rooting and finding a home in the place you have planted them. So, keeping them extra hydrated before the winter months is all the better!
We recommend this watering in order keep your evergreens safe from the winter winds. The winter winds can desiccate the foliage, completely drying them out, which only brings problems into the Spring for the plant!

- Tsuga – Needled Evergreen
One other option to help protect your evergreens from the winter winds is Wilt – Pruf. Wilt Pruf is a spray that can go directly onto the evergreen foliage, particularly helpful with broadleaf evergreens. Wilt-Pruf acts as an anti-desiccant which helps the evergreens from drying out in the cold winter winds!
