How It Started

Horticulture is a generations old tradition for the Briggs Family.
It all started with “Grandpa” Briggs, who owned a nursery in Dighton, MA., during the 1930’s and 1940’s, serving customers in the Taunton area.

Embarking on its journey in 1961, Briggs Nursery, Inc. emerged in North Attleboro, MA as a testament to the dreams and passion of Paul and Barbara Briggs. Their venture as a landscape design and build company quickly gained momentum, fostering a robust community of local patrons who sought their expertise for projects ranging from intimate garden settings to expansive ball fields and parks.

1962 marked a pivotal moment for the family as they acquired the current site—a former poultry farm, where they established a comprehensive retail nursery, greenhouse, and garden center.

The ensuing years brought both triumph and tribulation. Despite facing a significant setback in the form of a devastating fire on a chilly December night in 1969 that razed the retail complex, the resilient Briggs family rebounded swiftly. Rising from the ashes, they not only reconstructed what was lost but also used the opportunity to enhance and refine their facility, embodying the spirit of perseverance.

Deeply connected by family bonds, the enterprise witnessed the enthusiastic participation of the three sons—Paul Jr., Gary, and David—beginning in the 1970s, ushering in a fresh era characterized by expansion and lasting legacy. Lifelong friend, Steve Shumila, entered the fold during this timeframe and currently holds the role of Retail Manager, infusing a personalized dimension into the familial atmosphere.

Fast forward to 2008, Briggs Nursery embarked on a transformative journey by reconstructing an entirely new retail store, greenhouses, and nursery yard. This marked not just a physical evolution but a commitment to staying relevant in an ever-changing landscape, marrying tradition with modernity.
