Seed Starting With Kids

It’s time to introduce your little ones to the wonders of nature.

Or maybe they are curious themselves? Watch their eyes grow wide with wonder as their garden grows through the season. Seed starting is the perfect activity that combines tactile and visual learning. It also allows the whole family to get outside and in the sunshine! We’ll take out the guesswork, and let you know the materials and supplies you’ll need for this new hobby. Luckily, we have everything here at Briggs for you.

EQUIPMENT

Playing in the dirt can be fun if you have the right tools in hand. You can start by equipping your younger kids with the appropriate-sized tools. Here is what you will need to start this new hobby:

  • Gloves + Tools: Smaller hands require a smaller pair, so pick your favorite color and get digging.
  • Seed Growing Kits: The easiest way to plant, observe, and grow plants from seed. These kits have everything included to make starting super simple.
  • Watering Cans: Remember, those seeds need to stay watered. We have plenty of funky options to make the chore more fun.
  • Soil: We have the right selection of soil to keep your seeds happy and germinating quickly.

SEEDS

Seed starting is nothing without the seeds! Let us guide you with easy-to-grow options, making the experience much more rewarding. Here are six seed options that will sprout up in no time:

  • Snapdragon [flowering] Vibrant blooms that love full sun
  • Lettuce [edible] Fresh, crispy greens that prefer moist soil and full sun.
  • Viola [flowering] Early spring bloomer that germinates easily
  • Beets [edible] A hardy vegetable when provided with full sun
  • Lobelia [flowering] Brilliant blooms that are perfect to sow in trays
  • Kale [edible] Hearty greens that thrive in full sun

KNOWLEDGE

Books are another great tool to add to your kit. They integrate multiple facets of learning, aided by colorful imagery and bountiful information. Add these books to your shelf for your little one to grab on rainy days to keep the seeds growing in their minds. We offer a wonderful selection of books ranging from gardening basics to blooms, but we’ll get you started with these two titles:

  • “Grow” | Written by: Rizz Reyes & Illustrated by: Sara Boccaccini Meadows
  • “How to Speak Flower – A Kid’s Guide to Buds, Blooms, and Blossoms” | Written by: Molly Williams & Illustrated by: Miriam Bos

Now that the seeds are sown, it’s time to wait and watch them grow. Happy gardening!
