Herbalism with Amelia | Sun Tea

We chatted with Amelia, a community herbalist of Darling Dandy Botanicals, who guided us through the process of creating a delicious and simple summer treat.

A sun tea, or solar infusion, is made by harnessing the vibrant energy of the sun’s heat to infuse herbs in water. This process will begin to draw out the flavor and nutrients from the herbs.

Sun tea is a delicious and easy way to help cool, refresh & hydrate the body during the peak of summer. Have fun creating a variety of flavors, utilizing fresh herbs from your garden, or even dried herbs.
Some of our favorites include: peppermint, chamomile, lemon verbena, lemon balm, lavender, rose, hibiscus, and tulsi.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED
• A clean glass container with a lid
• A handful of fresh or dried herbs, these can be loose leaf, or in tea bags
• Room temperature water
• Ice
• A strainer
• Any sweeteners of choice (honey, agave, maple syrup, etc.)
• A sunny day

DIRECTIONS

HELPFUL TIPS
Keep this information in mind to make the process even easier and more rewarding:
• Ensure you thoroughly wash and clean all of your equipment before use
• Try to choose a glass container rather than plastic
• Keep the jar covered and sealed at all times while outside
• Wash your fresh herbs before steeping in the tea
• If you are adding sweetener, wait to add until right before you drink it
• You can refrigerate any remaining herbal tea for up to 2 days
