There is one woman behind the scenes who, as she so simply states, “wears all of the hats” to grow and sustain this venture. Meet the Owner, CEO, Designer, and Maker at Little Man: Christine Guanipa. An artist turned business owner in a beautifully unique small-town American success story. Let us delve into the folds of fabric stitched together to create Little Man Originals.

Q: When was Little Man Originals founded?

A: The start of a new millennium also brought the start of a new adventure for Christine. Little Man started in 2000 and she recounts the progress throughout the years as a “slow crawl”. At that time, she was an art teacher and would make the occasional handbag to suit her own needs and sell on a small scale. Along the path, about 15 years ago now, Christine attended a class for women artists who were looking to become entrepreneurs. This gave her the courage to transition from a teacher to a full-time small business owner.

Q: What is the origin story of the Little Man name and logo?

A: Christine was a student at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design where she was studying printmaking. During those years, she met her future husband-to-be a fellow artist and cartoonist. As any artist does, he would doodle and draw until one day he sketched a little man. This little man became the source of a shared joke between the two. There was no question when Christine’s hobby turned profession needed a brand name and logo. Christine once again asked her husband to “draw that little man” and from that sketch, Little Man Originals was born.

Q: What does a typical day at Little Man look like?

A: A typical day starts at 10am and ends around 5pm. Christine spends most of her time in the studio: ironing, sewing, cutting and packaging. No stitch is left hanging when it comes to acquiring her materials and fabrics. Not only does she have an eye for the unique, but she aims to source entirely from “Made In America” companies.

Q: How big is production?

A: All of Little Man is operated out of one studio and shop located in the town of Whitinsville, MA. Every creative step weaves together in that space from design idea to final packaging. Typically Christine runs this operation as a strong one woman show. However, she heavily values community and regularly works alongside one other seamstress. Throughout the year, she will enlist more help whether from seasonal assistance or her husband, who appears to share the same creative itch.

Q: Where can people find Little Man Originals for themselves?

A: To acquire your own unique accessory, visit Christine online here or in-person. Her website will direct you to either her Etsy shop or list of retailers where you can browse with your hands and eyes. The shop, located in Whitinsville, MA, is a quaint and welcoming experience on the second floor right through the blue door.

Q: What is the biggest accomplishment of Little Man?

A: Staying the course. Nothing has happened quickly, but the business still remains strong. Progress is slow yet steady and Christine greatly recognizes the value of that.

Q: Which piece is the best seller?

A: Christine’s entire self-care line, though specifically her Deep Rest Eye Pillows. If daily practicality is more for you, then try the popular Charlie Change Purse or Wristlet Wallet.

Q: What is Christine’s personal favorite?

A: A true artist, Christine favors prints over final pieces. Anything vintage or retro inspired will make her heart sing(er).

Q: What would surprise someone to learn about Little Man?

A: The company name and logo itself. It is sometimes assumed the name is a reference to family or a furry friend. Instead is has been a constant thread throughout Christine’s life. A simple sketch of a little man.

Q: What is the main goal of Little Man Originals?

A: To share the love of the creative process in a tangible and tactile way. Christine feels immense joy in the process of creating and wants people to experience that through her play with patterns and colors. Not only is quality of the highest priority, but equally, so are the relationships sewn together to create community.

Q: What is the plan for the future of Little Man Originals?

A: Christine is content where she is. Little Man has already made an impact on her community and, as Christine believes, a big business does not always lead to a big impact. Family is important and she feels no need to uproot and the value of relationships built has been, and will always remain, invaluable.
